Adaptation - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild I have recently become a "mum" to four baby red squirrels after their mum was unfortunately hit by a car. Over the past two weeks, they have gained my trust and recognise my voice. They remain in the wild and I visit them every day. >

Text - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild THE STORY OF THE BABY RED SQUIRRELS. It all started with their mum Remy. She was my favourite squirrel. She was confident, bold and always was first to test my photography set ups.

Flower - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild · 21h Replying to @DaniConnorWild Two weeks ago I found her body under a tree. Remy had been hit by a car. The following day I gave her a funeral and I laid a flower on her body until nature would take her. RIP Remy 18 27 127 2.4K

Squirrel - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild · 21h After her funeral, I sat in the forest. Upset that her life was taken so soon. But I was so worried. Somewhere she had a drey full of young babies. Suddenly I saw something hop in the grass. 27 41 1K

Squirrel - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild It was a baby red squirrel!! I waited 7 hours in the forest that day to see if any adults would go up the tree. But the babies were alone. Then I needed to make a decision. Do I capture them and rear them in captivity? >

Nature - I left some food for them - peanuts, sunflower seeds and fruit. They were eating!!!! I WAS SO HAPPY! At 6 weeks old, they had small teeth but were able to eat. I took a risk and decided to leave them in the wild and in the forest.

Squirrel - At first they were very nervous. I was this big unusual furless creature. From the day I met them, 2 weeks ago, I have spent 4-6 hours in the forest with them. They slept for most of the day but when they were awake, I was with them.

Organism - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild About a week ago, they have started to run down from the tree as soon as they hear me calling them. They recognised me. But more importantly, they trusted me. >

Groundhog - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild One Baby Squirrel, who loves to chat (he went viral S), also loves pear. It was always the first food he'd go for. One day whilst listening to him munch on pear, I decided that was the best name for him. Meet Baby Pear! >

Squirrel - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild Whilst editing my photographs, I noticed this baby. He has large circular ears and small ear tufts. The name Cheburashka popped into mind! Cheburashka is a Russian cartoon from the soviet union. My dad is English and my mum is Russian and my mum made me watch creepy cartoons

Nature - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild There is another squirrel. She is a female and much smaller than the others. She has a blonde face. I was thinking of calling her Moomin but I am open to suggestions. >

Adaptation - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild The baby squirrels have gained my full trust now. I will continue feeding them daily for 3-4 weeks. At 12 weeks old, they will become self dependent. Although, they will always be wild and free, I hope I will remain their Can't be a mum forever friends.

Text - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild FAQ Why are you so close? Their mother was killed by a car. The entire time they have been on the ground, I have been in the forest with them. Would they have survived without you? Unlikely. Even if at 6 weeks old they were able to forage, they would have died from dehydration. 9:32 pm · 23 Jun 2020 · Twitter Web App 85 Retweets 2.8K Likes >

Text - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild Are you worried that taming them will cause problems in the future? If I lived in a town or city then yes. But I live in a village in North Sweden where there are about 15 residents that are mostly 65+. Additionally the woodland is private land. 9:32 pm · 23 Jun 2020 · Twitter Web App 95 Retweets 3.4K Likes >

Text - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild The kits become independent from their mother at 10- 12 weeks old (they are currently 7 weeks old). This is when I will reduce feeding and I will not need to be in the forest every day. 9:33 pm · 23 Jun 2020 · Twitter Web App 39 Retweets 1.6K Likes >

Text - Dani Connor Wild @DaniConnorWild What problems do the squirrels face? Although the village is a ghost town, the road is the main route for timber trucks. They rarely drive the speed limit. 9:33 pm · 23 Jun 2020 · Twitter Web App 34 Retweets 1.4K Likes >
